The Malaysia Challenge was officially launched in 1997at Kuala Lumpur's Renaissance Hotel by its patron, YAB Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The announcement of the Business Focus Group as presenting sponsor was announced. The Malaysian Tourism Board, the Malaysian Electric Company (MEC), Malaysia Airlines, Star Cruises, O'Neill leisure wear joined in the support of the first Malaysia Challenge and added to the colour of the event.

As the championship got underway, 10 world class sailors provided exciting sailing with John Kostecky (USA) coming out eventual winners. Pro Active Projects, experts at match racing coverage produced the Malaysia Challenge programme. 25 minutes feed were taken by RTM in Malaysia to be broadcast each night of the race. The highlight packages were then distributed worldwide.

Malaysia Challenge's record for 1997 stands proud.  Officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, contested by 10 world class skippers, witnessed by over 12,500 spectators, 468 hours of air time across 121 countries and viewed by an estimated 200 million people.  The only drawback for Malaysia Challenge 1997 is the 1999 event, which promises to be even more spectacular.
